Uggerly Installation A/S has won one of the electrical contracts for the New Aalborg University Hospital in North Jutland in Denmark, where they are to install 7,000 metres of busbars in the 170,000 m2 building. This is a complex installation project, as the busbars have to be installed in both horizontal and vertical positions throughout the hospital building. The height is also a challenge, as the busbars have to be mounted at up to 4–5 metres in height or through shafts running from one floor to the next. The busbars weigh 110–125 kg and have to carry 2,000–4,000 Amps, supplying i.a. operating theatres, imaging and outpatient clinics at the new university hospital.
Uggerly Installation contacted Smartlift regarding the development of a custom solution for the electrical contract so that the company would be able to carry out the complex installation work at the university hospital. The Smartlifts have been developed in collaboration with Uggerly Installation, ensuring that they can meet the company’s need to install the busbars in different orientations and between floors. Smartlift developed three custom industrial machines to carry out the task, and the Smartlifts have given Uggerly Installation the necessary flexibility during installation of the busbars:

The Smartlift increases productivity and improves the working environment
Uggerly Installation also chose to use Smartlift for the electrical contract due to the increased productivity that the machines give. Alternatively, Uggerly Installation would have had to mount the busbars using a regular lift or scaffolding, requiring four to five employees, which would have resulted in low productivity and a lot of heavy lifting for the employees. Increased productivity and a good working environment were decisive factors in choosing Smartlift to solve the complex installation project:
“If we had had to use a lift or scaffolding to mount the busbars and had four to five electricians on the job, it would have cost us a lot in terms of productivity. Uggerly Installation is also committed to creating a good working environment for our electricians, and by using the Smartlifts in the work at the university hospital we avoided the need for a lot of heavy and challenging lifting,” says Jonas Kastbjerg, contract manager, Uggerly Installation.
With the Smartlifts, Uggerly Installation has two employees for each Smartlift to carry out the task of installing the 110–125 kg busbars, and the Smartlifts ensure that the employees are not exposed to heavy and challenging lifts during the working day.

Smartlift ensures great precision
Uggerly Installation is using three SLI 150 Smartlifts, which have a lifting capacity of up to 150 kg. The SLI 150 machines have been designed with a narrow chassis so they can easily move around the building, while, due to the narrow chassis, the Smartlifts can also mount the busbars no matter how confined the space is: “The size of the Smartlift is important for us during the installation work. The Smartlift does not take up a lot of space, so we can easily move it around the rooms during installation.” – Vagner Nørtoft, electrician, Uggerly Installation.
For the Smartlifts, various tools have been developed that the employees from Uggerly Installation use when installing the busbars, e.g. a gripper. The gripper is screwed onto each end of the busbars, after which the Smartlifts raise the busbars up to the installation point. The arms of the Smartlifts are designed with extra length, so the machines can lift up to 4–5 metres in height or through shafts. The Smartlifts are designed with a gyro function, which ensures stability and helps balance the 110–125 kg busbars during the installation work. The gyro helps ensure a high level of precision during installation, as it is absolutely essential that the busbars are positioned with complete accuracy when they are installed. In the same way, the joints must be completely accurate, and the busbars must be connected together like a sandwich, which means the gyro is indispensable for Uggerly Installation in the construction of the New Aalborg University Hospital.
The Smartlifts are also designed with wireless remote control, which is very important during installation of the busbars. The remote control ensures that busbars are mounted accurately, because the employees can fine-tune the position of the busbars at the installation point.
High degree of user-friendliness
The Smartlifts’ high level of user-friendliness is also very important for Uggerly Installation, so that their employees have a work tool they feel comfortable using. The smart lifts are very intuitive and easy to use, and the employees have learned to use the machines during the work after just a few busbar installations:
